International Master Holds Simul May 5th

Nepomnyashchiy in Hickory simul, 2004

On the first Saturday of May Mikhail Nepomnyashchiy will demonstrate his mastery by playing chess with up to 40 people simultaneously.

Sponsored by the Hickory Chess Club, the simultaneous exhibition takes place Saturday, May 5, from 10a.m. - 2p.m. at the Foundation YMCA Miller Teen Center, meeting room A, 701 1st St. NW, Hickory.

In a simultaneous exhibition, a chess master moves from board to board inside a circle of tables, making a move at each.  Challengers have time to consider their own move while the master cycles back to them.

Ten years ago, then-World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov was featured playing a simul in a commercial. A young boy, thanks to internet search engine "Ask Jeeves", made a move so good that Kasparov pulled up a chair to think.

With so many games to keep track of, most masters simply size up the position on each board as they come to it and move accordingly. Only the strongest players can expect to win most of their games against all comers under such conditions.

Nepomnyashchiy, native to chess-rich St. Petersburg, Russia, won the International Master title in 1995. The title is the second-highest that can be achieved in chess.

IM Nepomnyashchiy won 28 of 29 games at a Hickory simul in November of 2004. He did this in around two hours, about the length of a carefully-played normal game, rarely taking as much as five seconds to think at each board before moving.

The simul will be preceded by a lecture.

The entry fee will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.  Call 322-1493 to pre-register, and plan to bring a chess set.
